Under water, inside a train or both?

We all know that it is difficult to hold our breath under water, unless we are familiar with scuba diving! Nonetheless, the Amsterdam based design duo Million Dollar Design managed to take a deep breath and design an underwater world into an old rundown subway train. Commissioned by the Amsterdam Public transport Company, Million Dollar Design, represented by Dutch creative production agency Shop Around, were selected by Artists & Co to give a facelift to one of the 30-year-old "Silver Gulls" metro trains in Amsterdam.

Anneloes van den Bergh and Pauline Teunissen, founders of Million Dollar Design, blend illustration, photography and fashion to create a dreamy wonder-world with some dark accents. Their work is romantic with slightly rough edges. Faithful to their design values, they came across a romantic concept and they created an underwater world. Instead of a dark sense of dull gray stones on the ground and the plastic walls in the subway their design gives a sense of infinity in an underwater world where you feel like you can swim away. And although still being underground as a passenger, you are now in a colorful world of fantasy.. ..










Is'nt is lovely? I will board that particular load whenever I board the train. And I mean every single day! Ahhhhh.

With each of his new works, austrian artist erwin wurm reinvents the vocabulary of sculpture
turning it on its head. using simple materials, mundane objects, wit and written instructions, wurm invites people to interact with his art, transforming spectators into active participants, encouraging them to poke fun at the paradoxes of contemporary society. designboom just visited erwin wurm's interactive exhibition 'narrow mist', on show at the UCCA in beijing, which presents sculptures influenced by childhood houses, fashion fetishes an 'stuff' you can find in the chinese metropolis.

CD Sea

Renowned for his adventurous sculptural light works and installations, Bruce Munro with the kind support of UK press and BBC Wiltshire radio, urged readers and listeners to send unwanted CDs to his workshop some weeks ago. The reason? Munro visualized an inland sea made of unwanted CDs. The public response was massive and hundreds of CDs arrived from all over the UK and as far afield as California and Brazil.

“You never know how something will work out, but now I could not be happier. I’m so grateful to everyone who turned out to help. We had a magical weekend and CDSea looks amazing, like a giant painting on the grass.”

Over the past weekend (19-20 June) 140 friends of Murno and colleagues, including Kevin McCloud and other celebrities from the design-art world, helped to lay the installation. The grass was mowed at Long Knoll field near Kilmington to prepare the ‘canvas’, and on Saturday each CD was laid with a stone on it, to prevent wind damage. This proved to be time-consuming and so the stone laying was abandoned on Sunday. The result? A stunning inland sea made of 600.000 CDs which are dazzling like mirrors reflecting sunlight and moonlight.

Rearing fishes was a favorite past time of mine eon years back. There was a point of time I've got 6 tanks at home. Now, that fever seem to passed on to my elder brother. He's spending 1-2 hours fish watching.

Shanghai EXPO 2010

Better City, Better Life.

All the individual pavilion are jaws dropping. A day tour is definitely not enough.

Pavilion Features

Expo 2010 will have five theme pavilions, namely, Urbanian, City Being, Urban Planet, Footprint and Future. The first three are housed in the Theme Pavilion building in Zone B where is one of the Expo landmarks, for which the designing is inspired by the concept of the "paper folding," As an attractive feature, the roof is designed to imitate the dormer window that is often found in Shikumen houses (a traditional Shanghai architectural style). During the period of Expo, a wide range of events and ceremonies will be held in the building's three squares. The other two pavilions, Footprint and Future, are located in two modified industrial buildings in Zone D and Zone E respectively; they represent a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity.

Brief Introduction of World Expo Shanghai

World Expositions are galleries of human inspirations and thoughts. Since 1851 when the Great Exhibition of Industries of All Nations was held in London, the World Expositions have attained increasing prominence as grand events for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges, serving as an important platform for displaying historical experience, exchanging innovative ideas, demonstrating esprit de corps and looking to the future.

With a long civilisation, China favours international exchange and loves world peace. China owes its successful bid for the World Exposition in 2010 to the international community's support for and confidence in its reform and opening-up. The Exposition will be the first registered World Exposition in a developing country, which gives expression to the expectations the world's people place on China's future development.

So what will Expo 2010 Shanghai China deliver to the world? There is no doubt the Chinese people will present to the world a successful, splendid and unforgettable exposition.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be a great event to explore the full potential of urban life in the 21st century and a significant period in urban evolution. Fifty-five percent of the world population is expected to live in cities by the year 2010. The prospect of future urban life, a subject of global interest, concerns all nations, developed or less developed, and their people. Being the first World Exposition on the theme of city, Exposition 2010 will attract governments and people from across the world, focusing on the theme "Better City, Better Life." For its 184 days, participants will display urban civilisation to the full extent, exchange their experiences of urban development, disseminate advanced notions on cities and explore new approaches to human habitat, lifestyle and working conditions in the new century. They will learn how to create an eco-friendly society and maintain the sustainable development of human beings.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will centre on innovation and interaction. Innovation is the soul, while cultural interaction is an important mission of the World Expositions. In the new era, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will contribute to human-centred development, scientific and technological innovation, cultural diversity and win-win cooperation for a better future, thus composing a melody with the key notes of highlighting innovation and interaction in the new century.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will also be a grand international gathering. On the one hand, we shall endeavour to attract about 200 nations and international organisations to take part in the exhibition as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad, ensuring the widest possible participation in the history of the World Expositions. On the other hand, we will put Expo 2010 Shanghai China in a global perspective and do our best to encourage the participation and gain the understanding and support of various countries and peoples, in order to turn Expo 2010 Shanghai China into a happy reunion of people from all over the world.

In addition, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will offer a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogues. Before the conclusion of the Exposition, a "Shanghai Declaration" will be issued. This declaration, hopefully a milestone in the history of the World Expositions, will epitomise the insights to be offered by the participants and embody people's ideas for future cooperation and development and extensive common aspirations, thereby leaving a rich spiritual legacy of urban development to people throughout the world.

The Chinese Government will go to great lengths to make Expo 2010 Shanghai China a special event that carries on traditions and opens a new vista into the future. Our motto is: "Keeping in mind the next 60 years' development while preparing for the six months' Exposition." We count on the continuing attention, support and participation of all the peace-loving countries.

Le Creative Sweatshop – ‘Creativity exists everywhere’

‘Creativity is all around us – it is something you must constantly work on whereas the more you are surrounded by a creative environment the more creative you become – creativity requires everyday and hard work’ – Welcome to the Creative Sweatshop.

The words of the founders of the conceptual agency ‘Le creative sweatshop’ denote what these individuals do. Ndeur (Mathieu Missiaen) and Make a Paper World (Julien Morin), two French artists, both fond of contemporary art and alternative means of communication join their creativity and talent to create a wide-scope, design studio which is primarily based on modern means and mediums of communication, through the lens of the DIY (Do It Yourself) culture as also as working on paper volume and space scenography.

Glass Microbiology Sculptures

These transparent glass sculptures were created to contemplate the global impact of each disease and to consider how the artificial colouring of scientific imagery affects our understanding of phenomena. As part of the 2009 london design festival (sep 19–27) spanish designer jamie hayon will present 'the tournament'. the giant porcelain chess set will be situated between the two fountains and faces the staircase of the national portrait gallery in trafalgar square. the installation reflects the battle of trafalgar between the british royal navy and the combined fleets of the spanish & french navy, which the british won thanks to the tactics used by lord nelson.
